What to Expect When You Call

Calling your Regional Center for the first time can feel intimidating, but the process is straightforward. Here's what typically happens:

  1. You'll reach an intake coordinator. Tell them you'd like to request an evaluation for your child. You don't need a referral from a doctor, and you don't need insurance.
  2. They'll ask basic questions about your child's age, developmental concerns, and any existing diagnoses. This is not a test — they're just gathering information to start the process.
  3. An evaluation will be scheduled. By law, the Regional Center has 120 days to complete the evaluation, though many centers aim for 45-60 days.
  4. If your child is eligible, you'll work together to create an Individual Program Plan (IPP) outlining the services and supports your child will receive.

Eligibility criteria and timelines may vary by center. The information above describes the general process — your experience may differ based on your specific situation.

What If My Child Is Under 3?

Children under 3 with developmental concerns may be served through California's Early Start program, which is also coordinated through Regional Centers. Early Start has broader eligibility — your child doesn't need a formal diagnosis, just a developmental delay of 25% or more in any area. Call your Regional Center or the Early Start line at 800-515-2229 to get started.
